Sail Long Island's 2017 Schedule is here but summer is way late! We are getting a late start so Please call us for 2017 ASA Instruction, Private Charters, Group sails, Gift Certificates. Please note changes for JULY 4th Weekend We will be in Greenport

In addition to our regular instruction and adventure sail programs, Private Coaching on your own boat is available.. Join us in 2017 for even more big boat racing opportunities in Greenport and Newport. We race to have fun and sometimes we win something although adequate wind surely helps!

If you don"t see what you want to do, when you want to do it, speak up. We can put it on the schedule for 2017. We will try to adjust our plans to accomodate you. Best to email: captjoan@SailLongIsland.com or call us at 917 912 6342.

The Joie de Vivre and Captain Joan will be in Greenport much of this summer. That means we can arrange private mid week trips to CT or RI if you are so inclined for 2 to 4 people. Consider Mystic Seaport or Essex Ct. or Block Island for these quick trips. Ditto for mid week afternoon 2 hour sails. For now we are trying them on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m. Or call if you'd like a Monday.

In our 9th year of operation, we are in Greenport during the week when we are not off teaching coastal cruising. That means with advance booking, we can add a 101 Basic ASA class,an ASA 103 Coastal Cruising class or  ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering class during the week with at least 3 students so we can accommodate those who have to work on the weekends.  With this enhanced flexibility, we can better respond to your requests in 2017.

Our ASA school is unique in its offerings.  We emphasize coastal cruising because we have so many great places to take you for two day  trips that you will remember for years. We have a really great boat. It's not just a beaten up "school boat."  Our flagship is very comfortable and exceptionally well equipped with modern electronics and safety gear. It is like cruising on a private bristol yacht that has been lovingly cared for.

We know for sure you can't learn to cruise by spending a day sailing somewhere, staying ashore in a motel and sailing back the next day. There is no sailor  worth his/her salt that I know who calls that Coastal Cruising.  Cruising includes sleeping aboard, cooking aboard, and experiencing the cruising lifestyle.  If your goal is to Bareboat Charter we can really prepare you to do that with confidence in a foreign port of call.

We participate in local big boat races and you are welcome to join our crew. You'll learn how to really chart a course, and trim those sails. We map strategy together. Those races are our best value days on the water. It's nice if we win a trophy as we did in the 2012 Whitebread Race but we really go out to have fun.

We teach on our boat or yours but we  teach docking only on your boat. We also offer afternoon cruises and private charters. We don't stay out after dark on two hour sails.

Please call us with other requests or to buy a personalized gift certificate. We've helped people celebrate weddings and engagements, marriage proposals, anniversaries, and birthdays.  Give this special gift to your loved ones or friends of a class or a private 2 or 4 hour sail around Shelter Island.  Our ASA instructors are USCG licensed Captains, with advanced ratings, not just minimal licenses.  We love welcoming new sailors to our wonderful sport and with the price of gas rising, some powerboaters are exploring the joys of sailing and letting the wind power their vessels so they can afford to leave the dock.

Having trouble docking or sailing your boat? Arrange for private coaching on your boat with one of our excellent U.S.C.G. licensed captains certified for docking by ASA. If you have passed Basic Keelboat 101, you may wish to be certified for the new DE, Docking Endorsement.

Our goal is to welcome you to our sport of sailing. We aren't trying to sell you a membership in our club or sell you a boat or a timeshare.  We want to turn you into a safe sailor who respects the water and the weather. There is no substitute for time on the water. Our weekend adventure sails are perfect for that purpose. You cannot learn to sail in a week no matter how hard you try.  You can learn the basics but it is adverse conditions that come up when you least expect them that really teach you what you need to know.

IF YOU ARE A NEW BOAT OWNER, WE'RE HERE TO HELP YOU. We'll come to your boat, review the rigging or anything else you want us to review to make sure you have set the boat up properly. We'll review tacking and jibing. We'll help you understand what you need to do for the care and feeding of your power plant. We'll help you master docking.

Please call with any other requests. We've helped people celebrate weddings and engagements, milestone birthdays and anniversaries and enjoy doing it.  We will come to teach you  on your boat  on Long Island,  and in northern NJ.Email us at captjoan@SailLongIsland.com or call 917 912 6342.

Click the ASA tab on our website and review all that the course includes.  We teach this the proper way...cruising on a well equipped sailboat, not two day sails in the Hudson River and going home in between.  104 is boat systems and other things you need to know for a successful charter in a foreign land. You cannot learn to sail in a long weekend at Sail Long Island or anywhere else, especially in the Hudson River on 2 day sails to stay in a motel . To really master the amount of material in this weekend, you must have serious experience under your belt. If you do and your goal is to charter in the Caribbean or in Europe, this will get you the credentials you need.   Call Capt. Joan at 917 912 6342 or email CaptJoan@SailLongIsland.com   $595 per person, discount for two signing up together for each course.  $995 INCLUDES one course and sailing for the 4 days.

Read the complete description on the ASA tab on our website of what Coastal Cruising entails. More sail trim, basic navigation, man overboard, reefing, anchoring, planning  a course, approaching a mooring, plus much more. 101 prepares you to sail a small boat in 10-15 knots of wind near shore. The bareboat course (104) includes safe passage making, basic simple boat conditions that may arise on a charter boat that you may have to address, safe operation of the stove, the boat's mechanical systems, navigation from port to port, anchoring, man overboard and so forth. See complete description  on our website.  ASA 103 is a prerequisite for Bareboat and it is presumed you know how to navigate using a chart to plot a course.  If we are in Greenport, we will be available  Friday and/or Saturday for private charters or sunset cruises.

9/9 Sunset cruise Friday from 4:00 -6 P.M.  Possibility of 103 THIS WEEKEND. Call to tell us what you would like to accomplish.

PLAN AHEAD. YOU'LL LOVE OUR FLAGSHIP AND YOU WILL LEARN A LOT.

PLEASE read the following  important small print about our important policies:

GIFT CERTIFICATES are a wonderful gift for your new skipper, your significant other, your Mom or your Dad or to donate to your local charity auction.  Our very attractive Sail Long Island certificates are always appreciated by the sailor or would-be sailor in your life.  To a person, everyone who has received one has loved their time on the water with us.

REFUNDS:  Once we have committed to each other and you have paid your fees, we take your booking seriously. That time slot is yours.  We will mail you all relevant course materials so you can prepare in advance if you are coming for instruction. We turn away other business based on your commitment to us and our commitment to you.  This is a small business. Just like a B&B that requires pre-payment, we will not refund your fees if you simply decide to change your mind unless we have ample time to replace the booking and find others to take your place. That means two weeks in advance of the date you have booked.  We intend to deliver the service you have purchased and we will do our best to make sure you learn what you came to learn and have a terrific time doing it on a well equipped, well maintained vessel. If named storms are approaching the area we will discuss the options with you. We certainly don't go out in gale force winds or named storms. We are not deterred by rain or drizzle as we can usually work around them.  Our first priority is your safety and that of the vessel.  That's why we have our flagship inspected annually by a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary to indicate to you our commitment to having a well found vessel.

ALCOHOL: We strongly believe that drinking and boating are not a good mix.  Sadly, we have had some folks who come to us for a 2 hour cruise from the N. Fork Vineyards where they have spent the afternoon. Then a little more wine is just a little or a lot too much wine. For your safety and our peace of mind, we can no longer permit the consumption of alcoholic beverages on board our vessel when we take you out for a sail.  Thanks for abiding by this rule.

NO SMOKING ABOARD OUR VESSEL: Nobody wants to be down wind of your smoke. We actually think you don't want to be upwind puffing away since it is known to not be good for your health and life shortening as well. No smoking these days on trains or planes or our boat either.

Bring along a layer of clothing (it's always cooler on the water), sunscreen and a cap. Please do not Come in High Heels (it's been known to happen.) We appreciate shoes that do not leave black marks all over the deck. Water is also a good idea.
